Puzzles and Pinecones
This week has been a bit anticlimactic considering the lack of birthday celebrations and holidays that we’ve gotten used to, but it opened the door for us to do normal school things, like arts and crafts projects and academic challenges that build our skills in writing, reading, counting, and letter recognition.
Our big project of the week was to replace the Valentine’s Day hearts that hang from our ceiling, but what to do? Fate intervened when my neighbor put up a sign that said “Free Pinecones.” Since most people I know have never paid for a pinecone in their lives, I was curious. What a fantastic discovery… some of the biggest pinecones I’d ever seen! I knew in an instant what would shortly be hanging from my ceiling… “pinecone chandeliers.”
After a base coat of Carolina Blue, we decided to take advantage of the fact that we stockpile beads here. While it took a bit of trial and error to avoid getting glue all over our fingers instead of on the pinecone, in the end the results we fabulous.
In the aftermath of heartbreak as my beloved Tarheels had victory snatched away in the last moments, I decided to put up a tribute to show support in these darkest of days. Each foot was painstakingly painted and washed, each footprint was carefully cut out and labeled with the correct name, and then placed walking up the wall and along the top. I love, love, love the result.
As always, I include a few fun pics from the week.
