Valentines and All That Jazz

photo-4 (2) photo-6 (2)During Valentine’s week, we continued with our pursuit of phonetics.  The letter H begins Happy and Heart and our writers practiced writing for their Valentine’s cards. Everyone enjoyed making valentine’s collages for their families and each other.  Miss Maria must have cut out 50 hearts every single morning as compositions became more layered and complex as the week progressed. On Fun Friday, we turned our dressing frame rack into a post office and delivered our valentines to our mail boxes.   We were also listening to old love songs from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington.

Because February is also Black History Month.  This year we listened to mid-century jazz in our classroom daily. We learned about big band instruments by listening to a CD from the library that isolated the sounds.  We practiced singing scat.  We read children’s biographies of Ella Fitzgerald and North Carolina native, John Coltrane.  We talked about how the illustrators used color to portray feelings and the different sounds of music.

Our students’ other current fascination continues to be maps, atlases, map puzzles and the globe. In March, we’ll be expanding on the subjects: where do you live, where were you born and we all live on earth.
